How Does Your Meeting Fit into the Bigger Picture for Your Company or Association?

Sometimes as meeting planners we become task-orientated and don’t take the time to sit-back and look first at how the meeting we are about to plan fits into the company or association’s mission, values, culture and practices.  We also need to think about how this meeting will build on previous ones. This process is called “Systems Thinking”. Here are some key questions to ask yourself before you begin to work on the meeting logistics:
  1. How does this meeting fit into the organization as a whole?
  2. How does each element relate to what the company/association has been, what is it now, and what it wants to become?
  3. How can the meeting move the company/association forward?
When all is said and done, if you have solid answers for all of these questions, the meeting will be effective and successful.  This information will be used to build-on for your next meeting. Integrate Systems Thinking into your meeting planning routine and you will indeed see a pattern of growth.

MEETING PLANNER MEETUP
Wednesday, August 10th

8:00 am – 9:00am- Starbucks Coffee, on Big Beaver at Crooks in Troy

Join meeting planners from the local area for a cup of coffee and to exchange ideas and give/get advice on what we all do every day.    Do you need advice with selecting food and beverage for an upcoming meeting?  How have you cut costs without sacrificing quality and elegance?  Cheryl Dry from Meeting Coordinators will lead this month's Meetup on the topic of Menu Planning.

Cheryl has been in the meeting industry for almost 20 years.  Her career began with a degree in Hospitality Management from Michigan State University.  She was a catering manager with Hilton, Marriott and Ramada Hotels in Florida and New Jersey before joining Meeting Coordinators, Inc. in 1997 as an account manager, working with corporations and associations on successful events.

This Meetup is FREE!

You may send us an email in advance to let us know that you are planning to attend so that we can look out for you….or just show up.  We’d love to see you!

Meeting Success Stories

Start your tailgating early!

This issue's cheerleading chant goes out to Marketing & Sales Executives of Detroit (MSED).  Associations usually go on hiatus during the summer months, but not at MSED this year. What a smart move it was for them to book the athletic directors from the University of Michigan AND from Michigan State University on August 22nd

U of M's Dave Brandon and MSU's Mark Hollis will discuss "The Business of Branding College Athletics" at this special summer event.   As the business leaders of two of Michigan's most iconic brands, these gentleman should have some very interesting success stories of their own to share.

MSED is certainly thinking outside the box.  In this typically slow meeting time, they have made it a win-win situation.  It would have been impossible to secure such a dynamic program like this during the normal September to May season. Planning is the key with out-of-the-box thinking.  GO M.S.E.D!

Non-members are welcome, so join MSED for their Summer Tailgate Luncheon on August 22nd.   For full program details and to register, please visit the MSED website at www.msedetroit.org.
